Crafting the Perfect Mini Spinach Dip Bread Bowls

The magic of these bread bowls lies in their simple yet effective construction. Each element plays a crucial role in creating the ultimate appetizer or snack:

The Bread Base: Crispy, Golden Perfection

The foundation of these delightful treats is a can of refrigerated French bread dough. This ingenious shortcut saves you the effort of making dough from scratch while still delivering a satisfyingly crusty and flavorful bread cup. Once unrolled, the dough is easily divided into uniform rounds, which are then gently pressed into muffin tin cups. This technique ensures that each “bowl” maintains its shape during baking, creating a sturdy vessel for the creamy dip. As they bake, the edges turn a beautiful golden brown, developing a slight crispness that beautifully contrasts with the soft interior and warm filling.

The Creamy Spinach Dip: A Symphony of Flavors

The heart of this recipe is the incredibly rich and flavorful spinach dip. It begins with fresh baby spinach, lightly sautéed with fragrant minced garlic until perfectly wilted. This step not only enhances the flavor of the spinach but also reduces its volume, making it easier to incorporate into the dip. The softened spinach and garlic are then folded into a creamy base of 1/3 less fat cream cheese and fat-free sour cream, providing that luxurious texture without excessive calories. A generous measure of shredded Parmesan cheese adds a sharp, salty depth, while a subtle pinch of chipotle chili pepper introduces a smoky warmth and a touch of unexpected spice. Seasoned with garlic salt, salt, and black pepper, the dip achieves a balanced profile that is both comforting and exciting.

Finally, a sprinkle of 2% reduced-fat mozzarella cheese over the top of each filled bread bowl melts into a bubbly, golden layer, adding another dimension of cheesy goodness. The combination of these carefully selected ingredients results in a dip that is creamy, savory, and utterly irresistible, making every mini bread bowl a bite of pure culinary bliss.

Ingredients

  • 1 (13.2 oz) can Simply Pillsbury Crusty French Bread refrigerated dough
  • 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
  • 2 cups baby spinach, chopped
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • 3 oz 1/3 less fat cream cheese
  • ½ cup fat free sour cream
  • 2 tablespoons shredded Parmesan cheese
  • 1/8 teaspoon chipotle chili pepper, from your spice rack
  • 1/8 teaspoon garlic salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/3 cup shredded 2% reduced fat Mozzarella cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly mist 10 cups in a muffin tin with cooking spray.
  2. Open the package of French bread dough and lay the roll of dough on a clean, dry surface. Using a sharp knife, cut the dough into 10 equal rounds, about an inch thick. Using your hands, press the dough pieces into 3” flat rounds. Press each round into a prepared cup in the muffin tin, forming the dough into a bowl shape and pressing it up the sides. Set aside.
  3. In a medium skillet, bring the oil to medium heat and add spinach. Stir the spinach until wilted, about 3 minutes, and then add the garlic. Cook for another minute until garlic is fragrant and then remove from heat.
  4. In a medium bowl, combine the spinach & garlic, cream cheese, sour cream, Parmesan, chili pepper, garlic salt, salt and pepper. Stir until thoroughly mixed. Spoon the mixture evenly into the bread bowls. Sprinkle the shredded Mozzarella evenly over the tops of each bread bowl.
  5. Bake for 15-17 minutes until bread bowls start to brown on the edges. Let cool 3-5 minutes before serving.

Tips for Perfect Mini Spinach Dip Bread Bowls

Achieving perfection with these mini bread bowls is simple with a few key tips:

  • Even Dough Rounds: When cutting the refrigerated French bread dough, aim for 10 equal pieces. This ensures uniform cooking and consistent portion sizes. Pressing them into 3-inch flat rounds before placing them in the muffin tin helps create a consistent base.
  • Muffin Tin Prep: Don’t skimp on the cooking spray! Lightly misting each muffin cup will prevent the bread bowls from sticking and make removal much easier.
  • Wilted Spinach is Key: Make sure your spinach is fully wilted before mixing it into the dip. This reduces its volume and prevents the dip from becoming watery. Don’t overcook the garlic; a minute or so after adding it is enough for it to become fragrant without burning.
  • Thorough Mixing: Ensure all the dip ingredients are well combined. Cream cheese can sometimes be a bit clumpy, so stir vigorously until the mixture is smooth and uniform.
  • Don’t Overfill: Spoon the spinach mixture evenly into each bread bowl, leaving a small margin at the top. This allows the cheese to melt and bubble without overflowing.
  • Monitor Baking: Ovens can vary, so keep an eye on your bread bowls during the last few minutes of baking. They are done when the bread edges are golden brown and the cheese is bubbly and slightly browned.
  • Cool Before Serving: While tempting to dive in immediately, allowing the mini bread bowls to cool for 3-5 minutes after baking helps the dip set slightly, making them easier to handle and preventing burnt tongues!

  • Holiday Gathering: Their comforting and festive nature makes them ideal for Thanksgiving, Christmas, or New Year’s Eve parties.

Delicious Variations:

  • Artichoke Heart Addition: For a classic spinach artichoke dip flavor, finely chop a few canned or jarred artichoke hearts (well-drained) and mix them into the spinach dip.
  • Spicier Kick: If you love heat, increase the amount of chipotle chili pepper or add a dash of your favorite hot sauce to the dip mixture.
  • Herbaceous Twist: Fresh herbs like chopped parsley, dill, or chives can add a bright, fresh flavor. Stir them in along with the spinach.
  • Different Cheeses: Experiment with other cheeses! A mix of provolone, white cheddar, or Monterey Jack can offer different flavor profiles. A sprinkle of crumbled feta cheese on top before baking would also be delicious.
  • Sun-Dried Tomato Infusion: Add finely chopped oil-packed sun-dried tomatoes (drained well) to the dip for a sweet and tangy Mediterranean twist.
  • Bacon Bits: For meat lovers, a tablespoon or two of crispy bacon bits mixed into the dip or sprinkled on top before baking adds a smoky, savory crunch.
  • Garlic Bread Bowls: Before filling, brush the inside of the bread bowls with a little garlic butter for an extra layer of flavor.
