Whether you’re seeking an easy, satisfying weeknight dinner, elegant finger food for a sophisticated party, or a crowd-pleasing snack for game night, these wonton cups fit the bill perfectly. They bring together the rich, herbaceous essence of classic baked clams with the delightful crispness of a golden-baked wonton wrapper, creating a harmonious and utterly irresistible combination.

The Irresistible Charm of Clams Oreganata Wonton Cups

There’s something truly magical about transforming a beloved classic into something fresh and exciting. These Clams Oreganata Wonton Cups hold a special place in my heart, rooted in cherished family traditions. My mom’s famous “baked clams” are a non-negotiable part of our Christmas Eve celebration, served generously with crackers or, for some (like my husband!), spooned directly from the pie plate into eager mouths. Missing that tradition one year sparked an idea: what if the incredibly flavorful clam stuffing could find a new home in a crispy wonton cup? The result, I’m thrilled to report, was an overwhelming success!

The moment you try one, you’ll understand. The savory, perfectly seasoned clam mixture, infused with oregano, garlic, and other aromatic spices, nestles beautifully within a golden, crunchy wonton shell. Each cup offers a neat, perfectly portioned bite of pure deliciousness. This recipe isn’t just a meal; it’s a memory in the making, a dish that will quickly become a go-to in your repertoire for its ease, versatility, and undeniable deliciousness. Plus, keeping the ingredients on hand means you’re always just minutes away from a fantastic, last-minute dinner solution or an impressive appetizer.

From Classic Baked Clams to Crispy Wonton Perfection

Baked clams, or Vongole Oreganata, are a staple in many Italian-American households, especially during holidays and special occasions. The traditional recipe typically involves combining minced clams with seasoned breadcrumbs, garlic, olive oil, and plenty of oregano, then baking until golden and fragrant. It’s a dish celebrated for its robust flavors and comforting appeal. Our Wonton Cups capture all that beloved flavor profile but present it in a fresh, accessible format. The crispy wonton wrapper provides a delightful textural contrast to the soft, flavorful clam filling, elevating the experience from a simple spread to a perfectly packaged bite.

This adaptation not only makes the dish incredibly easy to serve and eat but also introduces a fun, interactive element. No more messy spoons or crumbled crackers! Each person gets their own individual cup, making these ideal for mingling at parties or for a neat, utensil-free snack while cheering on your favorite team. The convenience factor cannot be overstated, especially when you’re looking for something special that doesn’t demand hours in the kitchen.

Ingredients

  • ¾ cup seasoned bread crumbs
  • 3 tablespoons dried minced onions, found by the spices, some brands call them chopped onions
  • 1 tablespoon dried oregano
  • 1 tablespoon dried parsley
  • 1 ½ teaspoons garlic powder
  • A pinch of salt and black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 3 (6.5 oz each) cans of minced clams in juice, (19.5 oz total)
  • 24 wonton wrappers
  • 2 teaspoons grated parmesan cheese

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Prepare a standard 12-cup muffin tin by lightly misting each cup with cooking spray. This will ensure your wonton cups don’t stick and achieve a beautiful golden crispness. Set it aside for later use.
  • In a small mixing bowl, combine the seasoned bread crumbs, dried minced onions (often labeled as chopped onions in the spice aisle), dried oregano, dried parsley, garlic powder, and a generous pinch of salt and black pepper. Stir all the ingredients together thoroughly until well combined, ensuring the spices are evenly distributed.
  • Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Once the oil is shimmering, add the bread crumb mixture. Stir well to ensure all the bread crumbs are coated in the oil. Spread the mixture evenly across the bottom of the skillet and toast, stirring occasionally, until the bread crumbs turn a beautiful golden color and become fragrant and slightly crisp. Remove the skillet from the heat immediately. Open the cans of minced clams (do not drain!) and add both the clams and their juices directly into the toasted bread crumb mixture. Stir everything together until fully combined and the mixture is moist.
  • Carefully press one wonton wrapper into the bottom of each sprayed cup in the prepared muffin tin, forming a small cup. Take about half of the clam mixture and spoon it evenly into these first layers of wonton cups. Next, gently press a second wonton wrapper on top of the clam filling in each cup, creating a second layer. Fill these top layers with the remaining clam mixture, distributing it equally among all 12 cups. Finally, sprinkle the grated Parmesan cheese across the tops of all the filled wonton cups for an extra layer of flavor and a golden finish.
  • Bake the wonton cups in the preheated oven for 18-20 minutes. Keep an eye on them until the edges of the wonton wrappers are beautifully golden brown and crispy, and the clam filling is thoroughly heated through and bubbling slightly. Once baked, let them cool for a few minutes in the muffin tin before carefully removing them. Serve warm and enjoy these irresistible Clams Oreganata Wonton Cups!
